ClickTrail for Contact Form 7

CONTACT FORM 7 UTM PARAMETERS

ClickTrail automatically enriches Contact Form 7 hidden shortcode fields with stored UTMs, click IDs, and referrers, without requiring UTM parameters on the submission URL.

What ClickTrail adds to Contact Form 7

  • Auto-enriches [hidden] shortcode fields from stored attribution.
  • No UTM parameters required on the page URL at submission time.
  • First-touch and last-touch context on CF7 submissions.

WHY CONTACT FORM 7 LOSES CAMPAIGN CONTEXT

The attribution gap

Contact Form 7 hidden fields populated via JavaScript depend on the UTM parameters being present on the current page URL at the moment the form loads. Repeat visits, direct returns, and cached pages all break that dependency. ClickTrail reads from stored attribution instead, injecting accurate source data regardless of what is on the URL.

Common failure modes

  • Hidden fields empty when visitors return to the site directly.
  • UTM parameters lost on cached page loads before form submission.
  • gclid not captured from Google Ads traffic landing on CF7 pages.
  • Notification emails missing campaign source on high-converting landing pages.
  • CRM receiving submissions with blank attribution fields from CF7.

AUTO-ENRICHMENT

How ClickTrail handles Contact Form 7

ClickTrail supports Contact Form 7 with automatic hidden-field enrichment, covering UTMs, click IDs, and referrers regardless of what is on the page URL when the form is submitted.

  • Auto-Enrichment

Detects CF7 [hidden] shortcode fields by name and populates them with stored utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_content, utm_term, gclid, fbclid, and msclkid automatically.

  • First-Touch + Last-Touch

Both the original acquisition source and the most recent session source are stored and available for enrichment.

  • Consent-Aware Capture

Capture and enrichment respect consent state when Consent Mode is enabled, so the integration stays aligned with a CMP setup without requiring a separate consent-to-tracking layer.

QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU ADD THE HIDDEN SHORTCODES

Contact Form 7 FAQ

ClickTrail enriches CF7 submissions using server-side hooks, so hidden field population covers repeat visits and direct traffic.

  • No CF7 add-on, extension, or extra plugin required.
  • Automatic enrichment — no JavaScript to maintain on the page.
Does auto-enrichment require any CF7 add-ons?
No. ClickTrail enriches Contact Form 7 forms using the wpcf7_form_hidden_fields filter and records successful submissions on the wpcf7_mail_sent action. No additional plugin or CF7 extension is required.
What field names trigger auto-enrichment?
ClickTrail populates CF7 [hidden] shortcode fields whose name attribute matches its stored attribution keys: utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_content, utm_term, gclid, fbclid, and msclkid. Last-touch equivalents are available with the ct_lt_ prefix.
Does it work when the UTM is not on the submission URL?
Yes. ClickTrail reads from stored attribution rather than from URL parameters at submission time, so repeat visitors and direct returns are covered even when the UTM is not present on the page URL.
Can I get gclid from Google Ads clicks in CF7 submissions?
Yes. ClickTrail captures gclid on landing and stores it. If your CF7 form has a [hidden gclid] field, it will be populated from stored attribution when the form loads.
